Tallow balm comparison: 15 brands side by side (October 2026)

This is every tallow balm I could line up in one place, fourteen other brands and mine, one row each. I should say the obvious thing first: I make one of these. Craft Tallow is my company and Bare Silk is my jar, so check my row against our product page the way you would check anyone else's. That is also why the table is alphabetical and why Craft sits third, between Based Supplies and Eat My Face, rather than at the top where a brand usually puts itself.

Every cell came off the brand's own pages, read on October 9 and 11, 2026: the product page, the brand's policy pages, and the subscription terms in the store's own product data, which the table calls plan data. Anything from a site that is not the brand's own is marked third party. Each row is one jar, the brand's flagship or its unscented one, and the jar column says which. Where a page did not say something, the cell reads "not stated," which means the page was quiet on it, not that the answer is no. Where I searched and came up empty, the cell says "none found."

What the columns mean. The first columns are the fat: the brand's own words for it, whether the page names suet, whether it says grass-finished, where the fat comes from and how it is rendered. Then the label: whether every ingredient is printed as text, how many of four label questions the page answers, water, scent, the other oils and waxes, any preservative, and any ingredient on the printed list that a named scientific or regulatory body has flagged. Then the money: how much is in the jar, the one-time price, the price per ounce worked out on that price, and the subscription, return and guarantee terms in the brand's own words. Then whipped or dense and where the jar is made. Then the trust columns: where it ships from, any testing claims, what the brand's own site says about its reviews, what third parties say, where the two differ, and any regulatory or press record. The last three are a question a shopper might ask, the date each row was checked, and the pages I read. Every cell is checkable on the brand's own page in about a minute, and if I have one wrong, I want the email.

One jar per brand, the flagship or the unscented one; Craft's row is Bare Silk Unscented, in alphabetical order. List price is the one-time price for every brand, and per ounce is computed on it. Label answers (of 4) counts four questions a page can answer: is the suet named, is grass-finished stated, is a rendering method stated, is every ingredient printed as text. A cell marked (Oct 11) replaces an earlier read that said something different, and the Checked column names any cell still on an Oct 9 read. Scroll sideways for all 31 columns.

A few cells need a sentence of their own. Ancestral Cosmetics prices in euros and Tallow Twins in Canadian dollars, and I left both in their own currency rather than convert at a rate that moves every day. Ancestral, Tallow Twins and Vintage Tradition print a volume, milliliters or fluid ounces, where most brands print ounces, so their per ounce figures are not strictly comparable to the rest of the column. Eat My Face prints a 4 oz tin and no net weight, so its per ounce is by the tin size, and Evil Goods prints 4 oz without saying whether that is weight or volume. Based Supplies shows its ingredient panel as an image rather than as text, so its count of four comes from the October 9 read, and that jar was sold out on October 11. Based Supplies and VanMan said grass-finished on October 9 and not in the October 11 read, so those two cells carry the earlier date.

Some brands sell a second jar worth knowing about. Primally Pure's row is the Everything Balm, $30 for 1 oz and $56 for 2 oz, with ten ingredients including lavender and tea tree; their unscented jar is the Baby Balm, $34 for 2 oz with six ingredients on the October 9 read. Based Supplies and VanMan each sell a version without essential oils, Gentle Tallow Co. sells a lavender version, and Ancestral Cosmetics sells a scented Original beside the unscented jar in the table.

How to read this

Suet versus trim. Tallow is a category, not a grade. Suet is the dense fat from around the kidneys; trim is the fat pared off the outside of the cuts, and it is what most rendering starts with because there is far more of it. A page that says only "tallow" or "beef tallow" is telling you the species and not the cut. Seven brands in the table name suet or kidney fat on the balm's page or their home page: Ancestral Cosmetics, Craft Tallow, Fat Face Tallow, Gentle Tallow Co., Hearth & Homestead, Tallow Me Pretty and VanMan. Vintage Tradition names suet in its FAQ rather than on the balm's own page, and Based Supplies names it only on the brand's Etsy listing. That is not a scandal. It is worth knowing before you compare two jars on price.

Grass-finished, not only grass-fed. Nearly every cow starts on grass, so "grass-fed" on its own is close to free to say. "Grass-finished" is the word that rules out a grain finish in the last months, and it is the one that costs a brand something to stand behind. Nine of the fifteen rows say finished, two of them, Based Supplies and VanMan, on the October 9 read and not on October 11. Eat My Face, Primally Pure, Tallow Twins, Toups and Co and Vintage Tradition say grass-fed without it, and Fat Face Tallow says pasture-raised with no grass claim at all. When you are looking at two balms at the same price, this is usually the cheapest tiebreaker available to you.

Water. None of the ingredient lists I could read in the big table contain water, aqua, hydrosol or aloe, and that is worth saying plainly because it is the one column where the whole category agrees. Two I could not read in full: Based Supplies prints its list as an image, and Evil Goods names its ingredients without printing a whole list. It matters for a plain reason: water is what forces a preservative system, and it is also what a lotion is mostly made of. A balm with no water is fat and oil, so the antioxidants are doing a different job than a preservative would. If you ever see water high on a tallow product's list, that is a cream, not a balm, and it should be priced and judged as one. In the jar tables further down, every product that lists water lists it first.

Label length. Short is not automatically better and long is not automatically worse. Gentle Tallow Co., Hearth & Homestead, Toups and Co and Vintage Tradition print two entries, which is about as short as a balm gets. Eat My Face runs eleven, with shea, cocoa butter and coconut oil beside the tallow, and Tallow Me Pretty runs eight, four of them essential oils, which is a scent decision. What the count is good for is matching a label to a face: if your skin reacts to fragrance, the count and the names matter more than any other column, and a two or five ingredient jar with no essential oils gives you fewer things to rule out. Ours is five, and none of them are fragrance.

Label answers. This column counts four questions a page can answer about the jar: does it name the suet, does it say grass-finished, does it say how the fat is rendered, and does it print every ingredient as text. Four rows answer all four and five answer one. A low count does not make a bad balm. It means the page leaves more of the checking to you, and the cell spells out which questions went unanswered.

Flagged on the label. This column names an ingredient only when it is on that jar's own printed list and a named scientific or regulatory body has flagged its kind, and it names the body. No list I could read in the big table carries one; Based Supplies and Evil Goods could not be checked in full, for the reasons above. The flags that did turn up are in the jar tables further down, on Bio-Oil, Mederma and one Toups and Co serum: fragrance, BHT, retinyl palmitate, mineral oil and two silicones. Sources and notes, at the bottom of the page, gives each body's own finding, including the ones that found no risk at the levels used.

Price per ounce, on the one-time price. Every row uses the one-time price, the one you pay without subscribing, and per ounce is that price divided by the size the page prints. Where a page shows a higher price struck through, that number goes in the subscription words rather than the price column, so Evil Goods reads $34.99 for 4 oz, $8.75 an ounce, with its struck-through $49.99 in the subscription column. This is the column that moves the most once you do the arithmetic, because the jars in the table run from 1 oz to 9 fl oz and the sticker price hides that. Gentle Tallow Co. at $10.00 an ounce and Hearth & Homestead at $20.75 an ounce look far closer on the shelf, at $20.00 and $26.97. One more wrinkle: a whipped balm is sold by volume in your head and by weight on the label, and up to half of a whipped jar can be air, so weight is the only fair basis for the comparison. Three of the fifteen rows are whipped by the brand's own description, ours is poured dense, and eleven do not say either way. Subscription changes the order. On a renewal our jar is $15.30 an ounce, and the first delivery is $12.75 because it takes 25% off; on their own stated discounts or plan data, Eat My Face lands at $5.00, Evil Goods at $6.56, Gentle Tallow Co. at $9.00, VanMan at $13.05, Toups at $14.40 and Neptune at $15.30. Evil Goods prints three different subscriber discounts across its home and collection pages, and Based Supplies, Fat Face Tallow and Vintage Tradition sell no subscription I could find.

The try window. A guarantee is only as good as its number and its conditions. The windows here run from no stated window at all, through 30 days, to ours at 60, Tallow Me Pretty at 90 and Eat My Face at 180. Read the conditions next to the number; the table carries them in the brand's own words. Hearth & Homestead's 30 days covers new unopened items and refunds as store credit, which is a different promise from a used-jar refund, and Evil Goods' 30 days sits beside a 20% restocking fee in its refund policy. Neptune's banner says 60 days and its refund policy says 14, and Tallow Twins prints a 30 day quality guarantee beside a refund policy that does not accept returns. VanMan promises a full refund with no day count anywhere I could find, which is generous in spirit and hard to hold anyone to. Ancestral Cosmetics and Gentle Tallow Co. state no window, and Fat Face Tallow's refund page would not load when I checked.

The trust columns. Six columns ask whether you can take a page at its word, and they are where pages most often print two answers. Their site says is the review count and rating on the brand's own pages, as printed. Third parties say is Trustpilot, retailers and press, each marked. Rating gap and review notes sets the two side by side and quotes a dated review where one tells a buyer something the page does not. Ships from puts what the brand states beside what reviews report, Label answers is above, and Regulatory or press record is any public action or referral I could find. I quote pages and reviews in their own words, dated, and I do not tell you which to believe; a number that changes from page to page is a reason to read more carefully. Our own row has 25 reviews on our site as of October 11 and no third-party score yet, because Craft Tallow launched in August 2026.

The four jar tables. Further down, each of our other four jars sits among the products it gets compared with: Honey Glow among tallow and honey balms, Velvet Face Renewal among face balms, creams and serums, Moonlight Calm among blue tansy and chamomile products, and Recovery Balm among products for the look of scars and stretch marks. Each table puts one Craft jar, tinted, in alphabetical order among the competitor set read Oct 11. Their site says gives the count on the product page read; retailer and Trustpilot figures sit under Third parties say. Claim watch quotes a page's own words where it makes a drug-style claim; Craft's cell quotes its own page.

What the table can't tell you

Scent is the big one. Unscented is a label claim, not a smell, and tallow itself has a scent that depends on the cut and how low the render ran. Vanman says so directly on their no-essential-oil page: not unscented, will smell like tallow. Ancestral says their process leaves no beefy smell. Ours is nearly scentless because the base is suet rendered low and slow, but no column can tell you whether you personally will notice something. That is a sample-sized question, not a spreadsheet question.

Feel is the second one. Two jars with nearly identical labels can sit very differently on skin depending on how they were made, how hard they set, and what the oils do underneath. Whipped scoops easier straight out of a cold jar. Dense goes further per fingertip and warms in about three seconds between two fingers. Neither of those is in a cell, and I would not trust a table that claimed otherwise.

Heat behavior is the third. Every balm in this table is fat, so every balm in this table will soften, melt in a hot car or a metal mailbox in August, and set up again. Whipped tends to collapse and can re-set grainy. Dense usually comes back smooth. A grainy jar is the fat rearranging, not spoilage, and warming the closed jar in your hands, stirring with a clean dry spoon and chilling it twenty minutes brings most of them back.

And the last one is the person behind it. Several of these brands are a family and a small kitchen, and the table flattens that into a price per ounce. It cannot tell you who answers the email when something goes wrong, whether the recipe changes between batches, or how long the company has been at it. I would weigh that at least as heavily as any column above.

Honey Glow beside seven tallow and honey balms

What the set shows. No jar in this set prints an MGO or UMF number, Honey Glow included, and no list that could be read carries a flagged ingredient; Based prints its list as an image, and Evil Goods and Neptune print no full list. Review counts change by page: Evil Goods prints figures from 1,510 to 39K for one jar, and VanMan prints two on one page. At $21.00 per ounce Honey Glow costs the most, with Tallow Me Pretty closest at $20.25.

Velvet Face Renewal beside nine face balms, creams and serums

What the set shows. Only Sky & Sol (2.1%) and Herbivore (1%) state a bakuchiol dose, both in serums with water first, and none states a vitamin C percentage, though Shwally lists the same THD ascorbate Velvet uses. One flag turned up: Toups' Reparative Serum lists "Vitamin A Palmitate," the retinyl palmitate of the NTP 2012 mouse study, and Eminence prints too little of its list to check. Velvet's $44.50 per ounce is higher than every tallow balm here that prints a size, with Shwally's night version closest at $44.00, and lower than the two serums at $67 and $98 per ounce.

Moonlight Calm beside eight blue tansy and chamomile products

What the set shows. No product in this set states a blue tansy or chamomile percentage, Moonlight Calm included, none contains water, and no printed list carries a flagged ingredient, the Herbivore, Odacité and Anthropologie lists included. ANML is the only one that whips. Among the tallow balms, only Primally Pure, at $41 to $44 per ounce, costs more than Moonlight's $34.50; the rest run $15 to $32.

What the set shows. Bio-Oil and Mederma are the only lists read in any of the four sets with a fragrance mixture; Bio-Oil also lists BHT, retinyl palmitate and mineral oil, and neither current label shows a paraben. Mederma's full list sits on its FDA-filed Drug Facts label rather than its own page, with water first and dimethicone 2% as the active; three products here list water, and none whips. Earth Mama's $27.99 balm carries four of the oils Recovery names in an olive oil base, and at $37.00 per ounce Recovery costs nearly double the next highest, Texas Tallow at $20.00.

Sources and notes

How the facts were gathered. Every competitor page was read on Oct 11, 2026 with a fetch tool that does not run JavaScript, so text a page loads by script reads as silent. "Plan data" is the subscription terms in the store's own Shopify product data. For this update every store-bought ingredient list was re-read on Oct 11, from the brand's page or, where the brand page printed none, from Ulta (Bio-Oil), the FDA-filed Drug Facts label on DailyMed (Mederma), Anthropologie (My Neighbor's) and Pasteur Pharmacy (ANML); most tallow lists were re-read too, and the rest come from the first read that day. Trustpilot pages that would not load directly were read through Trustpilot's regional pages; where neither loaded and a search found no profile, the cell says none found. A search of fda.gov found no warning letter for any brand in the big table; the "Neptune's Fix" recall it returns comes from Neptune Resources, LLC, a different company. Blocked from fetching: bbb.org, reddit.com, amazon.com, tallowtwins.com (the tallowtwins.ca store was read), and two policy pages, on eatmyface.co and tallowmepretty.com; search found no BBB profile or Reddit thread for any brand, and with both sites blocked those gaps are unverified. For the jar tables, Fatco, Tallow Twins and Hello Selah blocked the reader. No brand called "Fat Face Skincare" was found; that row is Fat Face Tallow, fatfacetallow.co.

How the flags were decided. A flagged cell names an ingredient only when it is on that product's own printed list, read Oct 11, and a named body has flagged its class; each body's document was read once on Oct 11. Endocrine Society, EDC-2 Scientific Statement (Gore and others, Endocrine Reviews, 2015): names phthalates and parabens among endocrine-disrupting chemicals. FDA, Fragrances in Cosmetics (Feb 2022) and Phthalates in Cosmetics (May 2022): a label may list fragrance as one word without its components, so it cannot show whether phthalates are inside; the FDA also states it has no safety concerns with DEP, the phthalate most used in fragrance, as currently used. EU SCCS/1636/21 (adopted Dec 2, 2021): BHT safe up to 0.8% in leave-on products, judged with its possible endocrine effects in view. NTP TR-568 (Aug 2012): retinyl palmitate in a hairless-mouse sunlight study; a search of fda.gov found no FDA action on it. German BfR (May 2015): the EU permits mineral oils whose full refining history is known, and the BfR expects no health risk from skin uptake. EU Reg. 2024/1328: D5 and D6 restricted at 0.1% and up in leave-on cosmetics from Jun 6, 2027, on persistence grounds, not hormone grounds. Checked for and found on no list read: a paraben, a phthalate by name, triclosan, BHA, a formaldehyde releaser, a chemical sunscreen filter, a PEG or -eth ingredient. Dropped as not verified: a 1,4-dioxane note on Mederma's polysorbate 60, since the FDA's 1,4-dioxane page names PEG, polyoxyethylene, -eth- and -oxynol- ingredients but not polysorbates. Eminence prints key ingredients only, so its row could not be checked. Phenoxyethanol, dimethicone, glycerin and tocopherol carry no flag and are not listed.

Dates. A cell marked (Oct 11) replaces an earlier read that said something different. Cells still on an earlier read are named in each row's Checked cell: Based Supplies' grass-finished cell and ingredient count, Hearth & Homestead's made where, Primally Pure's Baby Balm cells, VanMan's grass-finished cell, and Vintage Tradition's fat, grass-finished, made where and product page suet cells (all Oct 9). Craft's cells come from the live product records read Oct 11, review counts included.

Marking. Every item from a site other than the brand's own ends in "(third party)" or "(third party site)". Quotes are the page's own words in double quotes, under 12 words each, and quoted fragments leave off a page's exclamation points. Prices are USD unless marked € or CAD; list price is the one-time price printed on Oct 11, and per ounce divides it by the size printed, or by fl oz where only a volume is printed.

Pages that print two answers. Evil Goods: the subscriber discount reads 50% and 25% on the home page and 30% on the collection page; the rating reads 4.5/5 on the home and product pages and 4.9/5 on the collection page; review counts read 30,000+, 39K, 1,562, 1,522 and 1,510; the FAQ says 4 ingredients where the page names 5; the Copper Peptide page shows 39K reviews above "Be the first to write a review." Neptune: the manuka balm page prints both a 60 day and a 30 day guarantee, and the flagship's 60 day banner sits beside a 14 day refund policy and a return answer that reads "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet." VanMan prints 4,863 and 4,685 reviews on one page, and Dakota prints "5 reviews" and "Based on 1 review." Ulyana Organics prints two ingredient lists, of 3 and 7 items. Eat My Face: the plan named "every 2 months" bills every 3 months. Ancestral Cosmetics prints a store-wide 9,586 beside each jar's own count, 600 for the Unscented jar.

Left out of the jar tables. Nefertem, Lady May and Sky & Sol had no honey balm; Osea showed no tansy or redness balm; Biossance's bakuchiol cream had no price, so Eminence took its place; Vintage Tradition had no face product with a stated active; Toups, Primally Pure and Evil Goods had no scar or stretch mark product.
