The Formulator's Bench

The Formulator's Bench

Free tools for making tallow balm at home, by weight: the recipe, the essential oil ceiling, the shelf life, the render, the units, the label, the lip balm, the fix and the cost. Built by the people who pour the five balms.

Why a bench

Most tallow balm recipes on the internet mix cups with ounces, guess at the essential oil in drops with no ceiling, and copy a shelf life from a supplier list. We formulate by weight, at studied doses, and we publish the method. These tools put the same arithmetic in your hands: type your jars, your oil and your batch, and get grams, drops, months and steps. No account, no email, nothing stored.

How to use it

Start with the recipe calculator for the grams of tallow, carrier, vitamin E and arrowroot for the jars you want. Take the batch weight to the essential oil dose calculator if you want scent, and let it set the ceiling oil by oil. Run the blend through the shelf-life estimator so you know the window before you make ten jars. If you are starting from raw suet, the render planner tells you what a pound of fat becomes. The carrier oil chooser, the converter, the actives checker and the label helper answer the questions that come up at the bench. The firmness calculator turns wax, tallow and oil into a tube, a tin or a bar; fix my batch names what went wrong and gives the reset; and cost per jar prices a batch at what you paid.

The method in words lives in the Journal: how to make tallow balm at home, whipped versus dense, suet, not trim and how to read a tallow label.

What the tools will not do

They state a dose; they never promise a result. They carry the published safety ceilings for essential oils and the doses the trials used for the actives, and they keep our own recipes where they belong, on the product pages. A patch test on the inner forearm for three days is part of every recipe. If you would rather skip the pot, the Craft Tallow Kit ships the bases and the measured vials, and the five balms arrive finished.
