Parabens and phthalates are among the cosmetic ingredient classes classified as endocrine disrupting in federal health research. Every Craft Tallow recipe is waterless and carries none of them.

U.S. labeling rules let "fragrance" stand for a trade-secret mixture of many ingredients, and the FDA confirms it. We name every botanical on the label instead.

The full story

The quietest balm we make

Regeneratively farmed, grass-finished suet tallow, blended with meadowfoam and organic cold-pressed jojoba into a silk-soft balm. The original is built by subtraction: no essential oils, no fragrance, no honey, nothing reactive. What we left out is exactly what makes it right for pregnancy bellies, brand-new skin, and anyone whose skin argues with everything else.

Tallow does the deep work. Its fatty acids closely resemble your skin's own, so it absorbs like something your body recognizes, calming dryness on contact and carrying the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K of pasture-raised fat.

Bare Silk is the foundation of the collection · the everyday balm for the whole family, men and women alike · face, hands and body, nourishing without being overly complex. Put it on before skin gets tight, not after.

What a balm actually does

A balm does not add water to your skin. It helps skin hold the water it already has, which is why we say press it into damp skin: you supply the water, the fat keeps it there. Tallow's fatty acids are mostly oleic, palmitic and stearic, the same three in your skin's own surface lipids, so it sinks in like something the body recognizes. The limit: tallow carries no humectant of its own, so on bone-dry skin, damp application is not optional.

The feel

Dense and silk-smooth out of the jar, it melts at skin temperature and sinks in fast, settling to a powder-soft, matte-velvet finish. The original has no scent at all. The Lavender edition carries a soft, true lavender that fades as it absorbs.

Inside the jar
Grass-Fed Suet TallowRegeneratively farmed, grass-finished, slow-rendered. Mostly oleic, palmitic and stearic acid, the same three that sit in your skin’s own surface lipids, so it sinks in like something the body recognizes, deeply softening without grease · and every other ingredient in the jar rides in on it. Nearly zero PUFA, so it stays fresh instead of oxidizing.
Meadowfoam OilUltra-long-chain fatty acids form a light, breathable seal that locks moisture in for hours · and, as one of the most stable oils known, it quietly shields its more delicate neighbors.
Organic Jojoba OilA liquid wax that mirrors your skin’s own sebum, conditioning and balancing without clogging · it fine-tunes how the tallow spreads, turning rich into silk.
Organic Lavender EOLavender edition only, at a gentle dose: Lavandula angustifolia from Bulgaria, the classic calm-down note. Unscented stays essential-oil-free.
Vitamin E · ArrowrootVitamin E defends every oil in the jar, while a touch of organic arrowroot lends the powder-soft, matte-velvet finish.
The ritual
  1. Morning and night, on clean, slightly damp skin: warm a pea-sized amount for the face (a nickel for hands, a quarter for a whole limb) between your fingertips and massage it in. A little goes a long way.
  2. One jar for the whole family, men and women alike: face, hands, body, lips, baby's cheeks and dry patches, as often as skin asks.
  3. For pregnancy, nursing and baby skin, choose the Unscented original. The Lavender edition carries an essential oil.

Grass-fed Montana cattle

Where the tallow comes from

100% suet tallow from grass-fed and grass-finished Montana cattle. Slow-rendered. No water. No mixed fat. No bleach.

Good to know

No common allergens. The Lavender edition contains an essential oil: for pregnancy, nursing and baby skin, reach for the Unscented original, or check with your provider first. As with any new skincare, patch-test on your inner forearm for 24 hours before wider use. Net wt. 2 oz (56 g). Made in USA.

Storage: A warm kitchen can grain the balm. That is the fat, not spoilage. A minute on the warming plate or in the hands brings it back.

Shelf life: Vitamin E keeps the oils fresh. Keep the lid on, out of direct sun, and scoop with clean, dry fingers. Unopened and kept cool, a year is comfortable. Once it is open, use it inside a year. There is no water in the jar, so nothing spoils; the oils simply lose their edge.

Shipping: In-stock jars leave within 1 to 3 business days.

Questions, answered

Will it smell like beef?

No. Our tallow is 100% suet, rendered low and slow in wet and dry steps by our Montana render partner, and never bleached or deodorized. The base fat arrives pale gold and nearly scentless, closer to unsalted butter than to anything from a grill. Unscented reads clean and faint in the jar, close to fresh butter, and nothing you would notice on skin after a minute; it is the true test of the base fat, since nothing in the recipe covers it. The Lavender edition carries soft, true Bulgarian lavender that fades to a trace. Where tallow smell comes from, jar by jar.

Can I use Bare Silk on a newborn?

It is formulated for the most sensitive skin in the house, and the Unscented original contains no essential oils or fragrance. As with any new skincare on baby skin, patch-test first and check with your pediatrician if you have questions.

Will tallow clog pores or feel greasy?

Suet tallow is nearly zero PUFA and its fatty acids closely resemble your skin's own, so it absorbs cleanly and settles matte rather than sitting on the surface. Organic arrowroot in the recipe adds a powder-soft finish.

Which version should I choose while pregnant?

The Unscented original is our pick during pregnancy and nursing. The Lavender edition is the nighttime take for everyone else, and lovely in a grown-up bedtime ritual.

What does grass-finished mean?

The cattle are raised on pasture for their whole lives: grass-fed and grass-finished, from regeneratively farmed ranchland, then the suet is slow-rendered at low heat.

How much do I use, and how long does a jar last?

A pea-sized amount, warmed between fingertips and massaged into damp skin, covers the whole face; hands take a nickel, a whole limb a quarter, and a child's cheeks take less. Used daily on face and body, a 2 oz jar runs about a month, which is why the 30-day interval exists. Face-only use stretches it well past that, and the 45 and 60-day intervals are there for exactly that.

Is Bare Silk for men too?

Yes. It is unscented, sinks in matte, and does one job for every face in the house: men, women, kids and babies share the same jar. Aftershave-tight skin and wind-burned hands are two of its most common assignments.

Is tallow good for sensitive skin?

Tallow suits sensitive skin unusually well because its fatty acids closely resemble your skin's own, and Bare Silk strips the recipe to five quiet ingredients with no fragrance or essential oils in the Unscented original. Patch-test first, as with anything new.

Is Bare Silk suitable for eczema-prone skin?

Yes, it is built for exactly that kind of reactive, allergy-prone skin: no fragrance, no common allergens, nothing reactive in the Unscented original. It is cosmetic care, not a treatment, and your provider's guidance comes first for any skin condition.

Can I wear Bare Silk under makeup?

Yes. It absorbs fast and settles to a powder-soft matte finish thanks to organic arrowroot, so it layers under makeup without slip; give it a minute to sink in first.

It arrived soft, melted or grainy. Is it ruined?

No. Heat only changes the texture; there is nothing in the jar to spoil. Soft or melted: stand the closed jar upright somewhere cool until it firms up (twenty minutes on a fridge shelf speeds it along). Grainy: warm the closed jar in your hands until it goes soft, stir with a clean, dry fingertip or spoon, then chill it for twenty minutes so the whole jar sets together. It may set a shade firmer than it left us; the recipe is unchanged. What is normal in a jar of balm, and what is not.

Why does this jar look or smell a little different from my last one?

Because the botanicals are real. Blue tansy, rosehip, calendula and helichrysum shift with the harvest, so color and scent move a little between batches. The recipe and the doses do not. What is normal in a jar of balm, and what is not.

I love the lavender smell of the Bare Silk Tallow Balm! I have very sensitive skin and have had no irritation with any Craft Tallow products. This tallow warms my skin and helps my feet and legs at night. It’s very moisturizing like all of the Craft Tallow balms.
