Per oz is price divided by net weight. Subscriber per oz is the same arithmetic on the brand's own printed or plan subscription price; ours is 10% off renewals and 25% off the first delivery. Vintage Tradition, Ancestral Cosmetics and Tallow Twins print a volume, so their figures are not strictly comparable. Up to half of a whipped jar can be air.All fifteen brands, every column
Every jar: 100% suet tallow from grass-fed, grass-finished Montana cattle, whole botanicals at studied doses, and five to ten ingredients you can read aloud. The 60-Day Skin Test on all of them.
Two jars cover most skin: The Starter Pair puts Honey Glow and Bare Silk in one box for $69, seven dollars under buying them apart. Subscribers take 25% off the first delivery, 10% off every renewal, and always ship free.
Before you buy
Beef fat on my face?
Suet rendered gently has almost none. Bare Silk is unscented. The other four smell of their botanicals.
A pea-sized amount on damp skin finishes matte. Greasy means you used too much.
Tallow scores low to moderate on comedogenic scales. Patch test if you are blemish-prone.
“With bakuchiol” on a label can mean a trace. Velvet’s is a true 1%, stated on the page, twice the dose in the published trial.
“Goes on so smooth and absorbs quickly.”
Bare Silk“I love the smooth feel on my skin and the lightly sweet scent.”
Honey Glow Balm
“There is a visibly noticeable difference, especially on the wrinkles on my forehead.”
Velvet Face RenewalA short guide
How to choose your first jar
Start with what your skin is asking for.
If the answer is "everything, gently," start with Bare Silk: the unscented, essential-oil-free foundation of the line, built for ultra-sensitive or allergy-prone skin.
If skin runs dry, tight, or dull, Honey Glow Balm folds manuka honey through tallow with oat oil and squalane for thirsty, barrier-stressed skin.
If your face flushes easily, Moonlight Calm is the evening ritual for redness-prone and reactive skin: true Moroccan blue tansy and blue chamomile, the sapphire color coming from the chemistry itself.
For the look of fine lines and uneven tone, Velvet Face Renewal carries a true 1% bakuchiol with oil-soluble vitamin C and rosehip CO2, without retinol's dryness or sun sensitivity.
For the look of scars, stretch marks and hard-working patches, Recovery Balm brings the richest botanical stack in the line: helichrysum, rosehip, sea buckthorn and tamanu.
What every jar shares
All five jars share the same spine: grass-fed suet tallow, made of fats your skin already knows, whole botanicals blended at studied doses, and nothing added to fill the jar. Read the sourcing story in Suet, not trim, the chemistry in the fatty acids in a jar of tallow, or the case for the base fat on Why Tallow. Prefer to blend your own? The same five recipes live in The Craft Tallow Kit.
How to use a tallow balm
Start with clean, slightly damp skin, straight from the shower or after cleansing. Take a pea-sized amount for the face, a nickel for hands, or a quarter for a whole limb. Warm it between your fingertips until it melts, then massage it in. Use it morning and night as the last step, give it a minute before makeup or clothes, and reapply to hands after washing. A little goes a long way. Used daily on face and body, a 2 oz jar lasts about a month. The full method, including the overnight slugging ritual, is in the Journal.
Lips are some of the thinnest skin on the body, and like your palms they carry no oil glands of their own, so they have nothing to replace what wind, licking and a dry room take off them. Most lip balms are petrolatum or a wax carrying a little oil. A balm made from suet gives lips a fat that closely resembles the lipids the rest of your skin makes, with no water in it to evaporate, so what you put on stays on.
Which jar for your lips
- Bare Silk Unscented: five ingredients, no essential oils, and it goes anywhere skin runs dry, lips included. A grain of rice pressed onto damp lips at night is the whole method.
- Honey Glow: the same fat with manuka honey extract, for lips that crack in winter.
- Tallow Lip Balm: in development on the same grass-finished suet. Price at launch, and the waitlist hears first.
Neither jar is a lip balm in a tube; both are the fat this page is about, and a 2 oz jar used on lips alone lasts most of a year. Orders over $35 ship free, and every jar carries the 60-Day Skin Test.
