Tallow balm comparison: Summer Solace, Lady May, Sego Lily and more

We haven't tested these balms against ours in a lab, and every fact about them here came off their live pages on October 6, 2026. Across the seven I could read, the price per ounce ran from $3.89 to $38. Two of the nine weren't readable that day: Lily Hill's store showed only a password page, and I couldn't reach a Shwally store at all.

Craft Tallow is mine, so read this page with that in mind. Our comparable row is Bare Silk ($34), five ingredients in a 2 oz (56 g) jar with no water, priced the same day. I did the per-ounce math at my bench, from the sizes each page prints. We're one row of eight, placed alphabetically.

How do the seven jars line up?

Here's each brand's flagship balm as its page read on October 6, 2026. Some sizes are weights and some are volumes, which is why the per-ounce column is close, never exact. Wherever a jar was labeled only in milliliters, I converted at 29.57 ml to the fluid ounce, and where a list names a ranch or a maker, I've left the name out.

Ancestral Cosmetics is in Ireland, and its page showed €26 until I asked it for dollars, which came to $29. Lady May labels its sizes from 9oz up to 85oz without saying whether that's weight or volume, so its figure is the label's math. Bigger jars move most of these numbers. Sunborn's 3 oz works out to $19.33 an ounce, and Sego Lily's 4 oz is $54, or $13.50. Lady May's 24oz is $45. Summer Solace runs about $17 to $18 an ounce across its sizes, and Bare Silk sits mid-table at $17.00 by weight.

What do the seven have in common?

Tallow leads every list I could read, and most of these jars don't add much to it. Clae and Sunborn sell one ingredient alone. Amallow and Lady May add one oil each, sweet almond for Amallow and vanilla absolute for Lady May. Summer Solace adds two, extra-virgin olive oil and organic calendula CO2 extract. Ancestral Cosmetics runs longest at ten, with olive oil, beeswax, raw Irish honey and six essential oils behind the tallow.

No list I read includes water. Six of the seven state what's in the jar, and Sego Lily's Renewal page didn't print a full list for me to check. No water means no preservative system, which is why we leave it out of ours.

Suet's the thread that runs deepest. Five of the seven pages name it: Ancestral Cosmetics, Lady May, Sego Lily, Summer Solace and Sunborn. Amallow and Clae describe their cattle instead, as grass-fed and grass-finished. We source 100% suet, the dense fat from around the kidneys, from grass-fed and grass-finished cattle on Montana family ranches, bought direct. We buy the fat. We do not run the ranch.

Where do the seven differ on the fat and on the grade?

Ancestral Cosmetics uses "fresh suet, the purest fat from around the kidneys," from Irish grass-fed cows, and its page says the team hand-trims each piece before it's rendered in-house at low temperatures. Summer Solace names "kidney suet from pasture-raised Northern California cattle," dry-rendered by hand. Sego Lily sources "high-quality kidney suet from select Montana regenerative ranches," and Sunborn's is dry-rendered suet, "single-sourced from pasture-raised cows in Pennsylvania."

Lady May says its fat "primarily comes from the kidney area and loins of the cow." It wet-renders that fat. Amallow sources its tallow "from pastured grass-fed grass-finished cows" on US farms, and it makes its creams in small batches in Cincinnati, Ohio. Clae's tallow is "100% USA-sourced from small family owned farms." Its page leans on testing, saying its tallow is "third-party lab tested over 30 times." Sunborn's page says it's third-party lab-tested for purity. Regenerative is the other grade word, and it appears on Summer Solace's page and on Sego Lily's.

How do their scents and textures differ?

Clae and Sunborn don't scent their one-ingredient jars, and Summer Solace's balm is "free of essential oils." Amallow and Sego Lily offer an Unscented jar beside scented ones, with eight scents in all at Amallow and Mandarin Orange at Sego Lily. The Lady May jar is vanilla. Ancestral's Original carries six essential oils, with an Unscented Tallow & Honey Balm beside it on the page.

The pages don't agree on what unscented tallow smells like. Two pages call their tallow scentless: Lady May says wet-rendering leaves it "odorless," and Sunborn calls its jar "completely odor-free." Amallow says its Unscented carries "the natural scent of tallow." A page can't settle that. Texture's the other split. Lady May and Amallow put whipped in the product name, and Sunborn's jar is Pure Whipped Tallow. Summer Solace calls its balm "unwhipped." Sego Lily's unscented page describes tallow "without any whipping or aeration," and ours is poured dense.

Who does each jar suit?

Lady May suits a reader who puts price per ounce first. Its 9oz vanilla jar was $35, or $28 on subscription, and the page promises your money back. Amallow suits a reader who wants a whipped jar and a scent to choose, and it offers "a full refund, no questions asked." Sunborn's for the reader who wants tallow and nothing else. Its promise is plain: "Love it or your money back, for any reason," with 30 days and a prepaid return label. Clae suits that same reader, with testing out front. It's $55, or $44 a month on subscription, and I didn't find return terms on its page.

Summer Solace suits a reader who wants a short unscented list from named suet, and its page says "all sales are final." Sego Lily suits a reader who wants Montana kidney suet in an unwhipped jar, with plans that save up to 20% and a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. Ancestral Cosmetics suits a reader who wants a scented honey balm made from Irish suet, rendered in-house. It promises "we will make it right." If you want suet plus four named ingredients, in a dense jar sold by weight and backed by our 60-Day Skin Test, that's Bare Silk. You've got sixty days with any jar, and if your skin disagrees, we refund it.

What would we ask any tallow brand?

Four questions settle most of a label, and how to read a tallow label walks through each one. The first is which fat. Suet is the dense fat from around the kidneys, and our suet vs trim post explains why it's the only cut we buy.

The second is water. If water or aqua is on a list, a preservative system has to be in the jar too, and it should be named. The third is weight or volume, since fluid ounces and milliliters measure space while grams measure balm. Up to half of a whipped jar can be air. That's why we sell every jar by weight, 2 oz (56 g) at a time.

The fourth is dose. If a jar names an active, ask what dose it carries and which study set it. The research set our doses. Most of these seven are tallow with one or two additions, so it's a question for the next jar you read.

Questions we hear

Which of these tallow balms costs the least per ounce, and which costs the most?

Of the seven brands we read on October 6, 2026, Lady May's Vanilla Whipped Tallow Moisturizer came out lowest, at $35 for a jar labeled 9oz, or about $3.89 an ounce. Sunborn's 1 oz Pure Whipped Tallow was highest at $38. Sizes mix weights and volumes, so per-ounce figures aren't exact, and Craft's Bare Silk is $17.00 an ounce by weight.

Is Summer Solace tallow balm whipped?

No. Summer Solace's Pure Unscented Tallow Balm page, read October 6, 2026, describes fresh suet that's dry-rendered and unwhipped. The list runs to three ingredients, regenerative suet tallow first and organic calendula CO2 extract last, and the 60 mL jar was $36 that day. Its page says all sales are final, since the balms are handmade and perishable.

Where does Sego Lily get its tallow?

Sego Lily's Renewal Tallow Butter page, read October 6, 2026, says its tallow comes from kidney suet from select Montana regenerative ranches, grass-fed and finished. The 2 oz jar was $36 as a one-time order, Unscented or in Mandarin Orange. Its unscented sibling, Baby & Mom Pure Butter, is the same butter with the fragrance left out, and its page says it's never whipped.

Do any of these tallow balms contain water?

None of the six ingredient lists we read on October 6, 2026 included water, and Sego Lily's Renewal page didn't print a full list. Add water, and a preservative has to come with it. A jar with no water needs no preservative system, since there's nothing in it for microbes to grow in, and Craft's Bare Silk has none.
