Why there is no water in our balms

Turn a bottle of lotion around and read the first ingredient. Water, nearly always. A conventional lotion runs 60 to 80% water by weight, which is neither a secret nor a scandal: water is the cheapest material in cosmetics, it thins a heavy fat into something that spreads, and skin likes how it goes on. Every other line on that label exists to hold the water in place and keep it safe to use for a year.

Craft balms carry none. That one decision changes what has to go in the jar, what the jar costs, how much you use at a time, and one small thing you do differently at the sink.

What a lotion is holding together

Oil and water come apart on their own, every time, without any help from you. A lotion therefore needs an emulsifier: a molecule with a water-loving end and an oil-loving end that parks along the boundary and keeps millions of oil droplets suspended. Cetearyl alcohol with a polysorbate, glyceryl stearate, lecithin, a stearic acid soap: formulators rotate through those names and the job never changes.

Water brings a second requirement. A water phase sitting at room temperature is a growth medium, hospitable to bacteria and mold inside of days, so anything with water in it carries a preservative system: phenoxyethanol, benzyl alcohol, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate. Those materials earn their keep. A water-based cream without them would be unfit for your face after a week on a warm bathroom shelf, and the reason your lotion is fine in July is that a chemist made sure of it.

Why a waterless balm needs no preservative

Microbes need free water to live, and a jar of rendered tallow, cold-pressed oils and botanical extracts holds almost none. A mold spore landing on the surface finds nothing to drink. Anhydrous salves sat on shelves for centuries before anyone isolated a preservative, and the physics has not changed since.

Oxidation is the clock that still runs. Fats react slowly with oxygen, and the tell is smell: an old-crayon note under the botanicals that you will recognize the first time you meet it. Vitamin E slows that reaction in every recipe, with rosemary extract in some. Your side is small. Keep water out with dry fingers or a clean spoon, and keep the jar off a sunny windowsill.

Higher per jar, lower per use

$34 for 2 oz is a real number to swallow when you are standing next to a pump bottle holding several times as much for less money. The comparison falls apart at the dose. A lotion asks for a palmful, because most of what you are spreading is water that leaves the moment it meets warm skin, and a balm asks for a pea warmed between two fingertips.

The gap in a waterless balm, and how to close it

Waterless costs you something, and we would rather name it than let you find it in the bathroom. Moisturizers do separate jobs. A humectant pulls water toward the skin and holds it there: glycerin, hyaluronic acid, urea, honey. An emollient softens the surface and fills the spaces between loosened cells, which a good fat does about as well as anything. Occlusion is the third job, slowing the escape of water already in your skin. Take a waterless balm on its own and you get the last two jobs on that list without the first one.

Damp skin hands you the first one for free. Water from the shower or a splash at the sink sits on your face for a minute or two before it evaporates, and pressing a balm over that window turns the balm into a lid on water your skin already has. Apply the same balm to bone-dry skin and it feels waxy. Honey Glow behaves a little differently, because honey is hygroscopic by nature and holds water against the skin instead of shedding it, which is why that jar reads richer on winter skin than its short ingredient list suggests.

Questions we hear

Does a balm with no water in it hydrate skin?

Hydration means water, and a balm brings no water of its own into the picture. What it does is slow the water already in your skin from leaving, which is the reason we ask you to apply it damp. Applied that way, it holds more water in than a lotion that evaporates.

With no preservative, will it spoil?

Spoilage in the microbial sense needs water, and the jar has none. Oxidation is the slower process that eventually catches every fat, which is what the vitamin E and rosemary extract are there to delay. Dry fingers and a closed lid buy you most of the rest.

Can I layer it over a serum?

Yes, as the last step, over a water-based layer that is still slightly damp. That is slugging at a smaller scale. Skip it over strong retinoids or high-strength acids, where an occlusive layer can push an active harder than you intended.

Is 2 oz enough to be worth it?

Why not add a little water for a lighter feel?

Adding water means adding an emulsifier to hold it, a preservative system to protect it, and dilution of the fat you came for. We would rather teach the damp-skin step. Keeping the ingredient list short is the whole reason the line looks the way it does.
