Sky and Sol is a mineral sunscreen company that also sells tallow creams, and Craft Tallow makes five tallow balms and no sunscreen at all. If SPF is the job, they make a product for it and we don't. We haven't tested their balms against ours in a lab, and every fact about Sky and Sol here came off their live pages on October 5, 2026.
Craft Tallow is mine, so weigh this page with that in mind. For a plain everyday tallow jar, their closest is The Everything Cream and ours is Bare Silk ($34), five ingredients in a 2 oz (56 g) jar with no water in it. It won't screen UV, and that matters more than any price on this page.
What does Sky and Sol sell?
Sunscreen comes first in their store, and typing skyandsol.com on October 5 forwarded me to skyandsol.co, where the shop menu leads with six sunscreen collections. Their Face and Body Sunscreen is $29.99 for 3 oz (85 g), in SPF 50 or 30. The one product that's named a balm is their Tallow Magnesium Night Balm ($39.99), meant for the feet and the shoulders at bedtime.
I couldn't find a plain tallow balm in their store, so the fair match is their everyday moisturizer. The Everything Cream is $34.99 for about 3 oz (85 g). Its page lists six ingredients in this order: grass-fed tallow, mango butter, propolis, jojoba oil, colostrum, beeswax. No water appears on that list. Their page says the tallow comes from "regenerative pastures in Australia," from grass-fed and grass-finished cattle, and the pages I read didn't name a cut of fat.
It's the same story on their blog. Half of the twelve post titles on its front page named sunscreen, and most set one brand against another.
What does the tallow do in their sunscreen?
In their sunscreen the zinc does the screening, and the tallow's there for feel. The active ingredient is 25% non-nano zinc oxide. Water is the first inactive ingredient, and grass-fed, grass-finished tallow is the second. Their page gives the tallow a supporting job, to "nourish and support your skin barrier," and leaves the UV to the zinc.
That's the right split, and it's how the rules work. In the United States, the FDA regulates sunscreens as drugs, held to the safety and efficacy standards for nonprescription drug products. The agency has proposed zinc oxide at up to 25% as generally recognized as safe and effective, and their 25% sits at the top of that range. Tallow isn't on the FDA's list of sunscreen actives at all. Their page tells you to reapply every two hours and again after a swim, which matches the FDA's advice.
A tallow balm, ours included, doesn't screen UV. UV is a separate problem, and a screen is the answer to it, which is where our post on tallow and SPF picks up.
How do The Everything Cream and Bare Silk compare?
Here are the two everyday jars side by side, as I read their pages on October 5, 2026. Prices aren't fixed, and either of us can change one next week.
| Detail | Sky and Sol Everything Cream | Craft Bare Silk |
|---|---|---|
| Price and size | $34.99, about 3 oz (85 g) | $34, 2 oz (56 g) |
| Per ounce | About $11.66 | $17.00 |
| Ingredients | 6 | 5 |
| Water listed | None | None |
| Hive ingredients | Propolis, beeswax | None |
| Scent | Subtle, no synthetic fragrance added | None in the Unscented |
| Fat named | Grass-fed tallow, Australia | 100% suet, Montana |
| Subscription | 10% off every refill | 25% off the first, 10% off renewals |
| Guarantee | 180 days | 60 days |
Per ounce, theirs is the better buy, and it isn't close. A subscription narrows the gap without closing it. A first subscribed Bare Silk is $25.50 and renewals are $30.60, while their refills come to about $31.49 for the bigger jar. Our free shipping starts at $35. Their shipping policy page wouldn't load for me, so I can't give you their free-shipping threshold.
What does each one do well?
Two things on their side stand out, and the first is a guarantee that runs 180 days. Their returns page even takes back slightly used product. That's three times our sixty days, and on that count theirs is the stronger promise. The second is the sunscreen itself. It's a mineral SPF with its active stated plainly and the tallow kept to a supporting role, and we don't make one.
On our side, the difference starts with the cut of fat. We source 100% suet, the dense fat from around the kidneys, from grass-fed and grass-finished cattle on Montana family ranches, bought direct. We buy the fat. We do not run the ranch. Bare Silk also leaves out the hive, and the Unscented original smells like nothing. The Craft Tallow Kit ($110, on pre-order with about a three-week ship window) is there if you'd rather blend your own.
Which jar fits which reader?
Buy their sunscreen if you want a mineral SPF with tallow in the base, because that's a jar we don't make. Their cream fits a reader who wants more product per dollar and the longer guarantee. Bare Silk is for a reader who wants five ingredients and no scent at all, in a dense jar that goes on morning and night. It's cosmetic care, not a treatment. Your provider's plan comes first. In the morning, your sunscreen still goes on last, over the balm, before you head outside.
The jar for this job is Bare Silk ($34). Subscribe to two jars and a third rides free, and every subscription takes 25% off the first delivery.
Questions we hear
Does Sky and Sol sell a plain tallow balm?
I couldn't find one on October 5, 2026, and the only product with balm in its name was a bedtime magnesium balm at $39.99. Their closest everyday jar is The Everything Cream. It's $34.99 for about 3 oz, with six ingredients and no water listed.
Can a tallow balm replace sunscreen?
No, because tallow doesn't screen UV and it isn't on the FDA's list of sunscreen active ingredients. In the United States, sunscreens are regulated as drugs. The FDA advises a broad-spectrum SPF 15 or higher, reapplied at least every two hours and more often when you swim. Craft Tallow makes no sunscreen, and our balms carry no SPF of any kind.
Is Sky and Sol cheaper than Craft Tallow?
Yes, per ounce. On October 5, 2026, The Everything Cream was $34.99 for about 3 oz, roughly $11.66 an ounce, against $17.00 an ounce for a 2 oz Bare Silk at $34. Subscriptions don't close the gap. Our first delivery takes 25% off and theirs takes 10% off every refill, yet theirs still costs less per ounce.
Which brand has the longer guarantee?
Sky and Sol does, by a wide margin. On October 5, 2026, their returns page offered 180 days, even on slightly used product, and they cover the return label. Ours is the 60-Day Skin Test. You get sixty days with any jar, and if your skin disagrees, we refund it.
