Craft Tallow vs McBee Farm tallow: the TV farm's balm and ours

McBee Farm tallow is whipped tallow skincare made on the McBee family's cattle farm in Gallatin, Missouri, the farm behind a reality series. It's a jar with a short ingredient list, from people who raise their own cattle. Next to ours, the differences you'd feel on your skin come down to two things, texture and scent. We haven't tested their balms against ours in a lab, and every fact about McBee here came off their live pages on October 5, 2026.

Craft Tallow is mine, so read this with that in mind. The jar I'd set beside their Whipped Tallow Skin Balm is Bare Silk ($34), five ingredients in a 2 oz (56 g) jar that's poured dense and sold by weight. The Unscented original carries no essential oils or fragrance, so it smells like nothing.

What is McBee Farm tallow?

It's a farm product line from McBee Farm & Cattle Co, a family cattle operation in Gallatin, Missouri. The family's story became a reality series, The McBee Dynasty, in 2023. The tallow skincare line launched in 2025.

Their About Tallow page says the fat comes from the same grass-fed cattle they raise and sell as beef. It's specific about the cut. The suet is slow-rendered at low heat, then whipped to a "light, airy texture" once it cools. Five more ingredients go in, and the jars are made by hand in small batches on the farm, then shipped from Gallatin.

Their tallow shelf held four skincare jars on October 5, 2026, and they're all whipped. The Skin Balm and the Face Cream each run $34.99 at 2 oz, and the Baby Balm and Baby Butter run $26.99.

How does their Skin Balm compare with Bare Silk?

Their Skin Balm does the same everyday job as Bare Silk, so that's the pair I've lined up here.

At 2 oz the prices nearly match, and their 4 oz jar is the better buy per ounce. We don't make a jar that size. Their pages list ounces without grams, so the per-ounce math in the table uses the numbers exactly as they print them.

The two lists are close cousins. Theirs reads, in order: grass-fed beef tallow, jojoba oil, vitamin E, lavender essential oil, frankincense essential oil, vanilla. Bare Silk's is one shorter. Ours carries grass-fed suet tallow, meadowfoam seed oil, organic jojoba oil, vitamin E, organic arrowroot. Neither has water in it.

Raised or bought: does it matter who owns the cattle?

Both of us start from suet, and both start from grass-fed cattle. The difference is who owns the animal. McBee raises the cattle and renders the fat on the same farm, and their FAQ puts it in four words: "We own the farm." We don't own a farm.

We source 100% suet, the dense fat from around the kidneys, from grass-fed and grass-finished cattle on Montana family ranches, bought direct. We buy the fat. We do not run the ranch. Our Montana render partner renders it, and our balms are blended in small batches in the Mountain West. Orders are checked in Cottonwood Heights, Utah, and the family tapes the boxes before they ship, which is as close to a farm as we've got.

I don't count either model as better on its face. A farm that raises its own herd can vouch for every animal behind the jar, and that's a real strength. Our end is narrower. We buy one cut from ranchers who do that work well, and our own hours go into the recipes.

What does each jar do well?

Two things stand out on their side, and the first is the chain from pasture to jar on one farm. They're clear about the cut and where it comes from. The second is the 4 oz jar, which brings the cost down to about $11.75 an ounce for a family covering a lot of skin.

Scent is the real fork between the two jars. Their Skin Balm's list carries lavender and frankincense essential oils plus vanilla, and it's sold as Vanilla or Lavender. Bare Silk Unscented smells like nothing. A 2024 review by Sukakul and colleagues counts fragrances among the most commonly reported contact allergens. One European study it cites found fragrance contact allergy in 4.5% of the general population, and a few essential oils sit in some international baseline patch-test series. For reactive skin, I'd start unscented. We sell a Lavender edition of Bare Silk too, for anyone who wants scent in the jar.

Which jar should you buy?

Buy theirs if the farm story is why you're here, or if you go through balm fast enough to want a 4 oz jar. Their Skin Balm in Vanilla or Lavender is a sound pick for anyone who likes scent in a jar. Bare Silk is a third jar to weigh. It's the one I'd hand a reader who wants no scent at all, or sixty days to make up their mind. If outdoor work is hard on your hands and heels, Recovery Balm ($74) is the jar we built for them, with helichrysum and tamanu in the recipe. It's cosmetic care, not a treatment. Your provider's plan comes first.

Start with Bare Silk ($34), five ingredients and sixty days to disagree.

Questions we hear

Is McBee tallow whipped?

Yes. Their pages say the rendered suet is whipped to a "light, airy texture" once it cools, and the word is in their product names. Craft Tallow jars are poured dense. Which one you like is a matter of feel on the fingertip, and it's worth trying both if you can.

Is McBee tallow cheaper than Craft Tallow?

It depends on the jar size, and the answer flips between their two sizes. On October 5, 2026, their 2 oz Whipped Tallow Skin Balm was $34.99 against $34 for a 2 oz Bare Silk. Their 4 oz jar was $46.99, about $11.75 an ounce. We don't sell a 4 oz balm, but our free shipping starts at $35 against their $75.

Which jar suits a baby's skin?

Our pointer for baby skin is Bare Silk Unscented, with no essential oils or fragrance. McBee's unscented pick is its Baby Balm. Its description on October 5, 2026 named grass-fed tallow and unscented jojoba oil, while the ingredient panel on the same page listed six ingredients with essential oils. It's worth asking them which list is in the jar before you buy.

Is this the tallow from The McBee Dynasty?

Yes. McBee Farm & Cattle Co is the Gallatin, Missouri family farm whose story became the reality series The McBee Dynasty in 2023, according to their About page. The family launched its grass-fed tallow skincare line in 2025. Their tallow is sold through the farm's own online store, alongside their beef and merchandise.
