Our scented tallow balms come in four editions: Bare Silk's Lavender Edition, Honey Glow's Vanilla Edition, Velvet's Frankincense Edition and Velvet's Bulgarian Rose Edition. Each adds one botanical, at a studied dose, to a recipe that otherwise stays the same. You're choosing a smell, and the jar's job doesn't change.
If you'd like to try a scent first, I'd hand you the Bare Silk Lavender Edition ($34 as of October 6, 2026). It's our five-ingredient jar with lavender oil as a sixth.
In my wear tests, each scented jar smells like its botanical going on, then quiets as the balm settles in. The suet underneath doesn't smell of much, so the botanical is what you'll notice.
What do the scented tallow balm editions smell like?
| Edition | Jar | What's added | How it smells to me |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unscented | Bare Silk ($34) | Nothing | Like nothing |
| Lavender Edition | Bare Silk ($34) | Bulgarian lavender essential oil | Soft lavender, quiet once it sinks in |
| Classic | Honey Glow ($42) | Nothing | Faint honey and oat |
| Vanilla Edition | Honey Glow ($42) | Vanilla CO2 extract | Warm and creamy, not bakery-sweet |
| Frankincense Edition | Velvet ($89) | Frankincense CO2 extract | Resinous, with a lemon edge |
| Bulgarian Rose Edition | Velvet ($89) | Bulgarian rose CO2 extract | Soft rose, floral at a whisper |
Lavender's the one essential oil of the four. The Five Jar Flight comes in two versions, both $308: Unscented, Classic and Frankincense, or Lavender, Vanilla and Rose. Moonlight Calm and Recovery Balm come one way, scented by their own botanicals.
What does lavender do in a tallow balm?
Lavender oil comes from Lavandula angustifolia, and its main compounds are linalool and linalyl acetate. Both react with oxygen in the air and form hydroperoxides that can sensitize skin, a 2016 study by Hagvall and Bråred Christensson explains. Of the patients they tested for a suspected contact allergy, 2.8% reacted to oxidized lavender oil. It's among the highest rates seen with essential oils.
Europe wants these compounds named on a label: linalool sat on its first list of fragrance allergens, and a 2023 rule added linalyl acetate and lavender oil itself. Above 0.001%, a leave-on product like a balm can't drop any of them from its EU label. Our label names the oil.
NCCIH, the federal center for complementary health, says it's unclear whether aromatherapy with lavender oil helps sleep quality or insomnia. An oral lavender oil product might help anxiety, it adds, but the studies were small. Neither finding is about a balm. We don't claim calm or sleep for this jar, and the lavender's there for the smell.
What makes a vanilla tallow balm smell like vanilla?
Honey Glow's Vanilla Edition ($42) adds vanilla CO2 extract to the Classic recipe, and it's the edition that smells most like a kitchen. The vanilla extract in your cupboard stays there, though. By the FDA's standard, it's a solution in water and ethyl alcohol, at least 35% alcohol by volume, and our recipes hold no water.
What you smell is led by vanillin. Gastelbondo and colleagues, in a 2025 paper, call it the most abundant volatile compound in natural vanilla extract. It forms as the green pods are cured. Natural vanilla extract holds more than 200 identified compounds, they note, a profile synthetic substitutes can't duplicate. Vanillin made Europe's 2023 allergen list too, food smell or not. On my skin, the Vanilla Edition reads warm and creamy, closer to a split bean than a cookie.
Frankincense or rose: which Velvet edition?
Velvet Face Renewal ($89) has no unscented edition, so you'll pick one of two. The Frankincense Edition carries a frankincense CO2 extract that's there for scent alone, and our frankincense post explains why we don't ask more of it.
The Bulgarian Rose Edition carries a CO2 extract of Rosa damascena, the same rose that's distilled into rose otto. Rose oil is one of the most expensive essential oils, a 2021 study by Cebi notes, and it takes 3,500 to 4,000 kg of flowers to distill one kilogram. Its main scent compounds include citronellol and geraniol. Both sat on Europe's first allergen list, and the 2023 rule didn't stop there: it named rose flower oil outright.
Velvet's job doesn't change. A true 1% bakuchiol and 1.5% vitamin C work on the look of fine lines and tone.
Who should pick Unscented or Classic?
Bare Silk Unscented is the jar I'd point you to for pregnancy and nursing, and for a baby's skin. It's five ingredients and no essential oils. Our post on fragrance-free vs unscented explains what its label word promises. Honey Glow Classic is Honey Glow without the vanilla, though it still smells faintly of honey and oat.
Reactive skin is the other reason to skip a scent. The EU's consumer safety committee put contact allergy to fragrance ingredients at 1 to 3% of Europe's general population in 2012. A dermatologist can patch test you. It's cosmetic care, not a treatment, and your provider's plan comes first.
NCCIH also notes a few reported cases of breast swelling in children who used topical products with lavender, and says it's unclear whether the lavender was responsible. That's thin evidence, and Unscented takes the question off the table.
For a first scented jar, I'd start with the Bare Silk Lavender Edition, the shortest label of the four. Whatever you notice, you'll know where it came from. If it's for pregnancy or the baby, choose the Unscented original at the same price.

Questions we hear
What does lavender tallow balm do?
A lavender tallow balm slows water loss and relieves the feel of dry, tight skin. The lavender's there for smell. NCCIH says it's unclear whether lavender aromatherapy helps sleep quality or insomnia. Lavender oil and its compound linalyl acetate are named fragrance allergens in Europe, so patch test first if scent has bothered you.
Can you put vanilla extract in tallow balm?
Kitchen vanilla extract is a poor fit, since it brings water into a balm built without any. The FDA defines it as a solution in water and ethyl alcohol. Our Honey Glow Vanilla Edition ($42) uses a vanilla CO2 extract instead, at a studied dose, and it's warm and creamy.
Is rose tallow balm good for your face?
Our rose jar is Velvet Face Renewal's Bulgarian Rose Edition ($89), a face balm for the look of fine lines. Its rose CO2 extract's there for scent alone. A true 1% bakuchiol and 1.5% vitamin C do the work in both editions. Rose flower oil is a named fragrance allergen in Europe, so try a small patch of skin first if scent has bothered you.
Which tallow balm scent suits pregnancy or a baby?
We point to the one with no scent at all, Bare Silk Unscented ($34), five ingredients and no essential oils. That goes for pregnancy and nursing, and for a baby's skin. Velvet's the one jar we keep for adults, in either edition, and your OB or pediatrician has the final say on anything new.

Start with the beef tallow for skin guide. Our post on whether tallow smells like beef covers the base under every scent, and fragrance oils vs essential oils explains why there's no fragrance oil in our jars. For a home batch, essential oils for tallow balm sets the dose ceiling, oil by oil. Tinted tallow balm is the other add-in people ask about, and why we skip it.
