Tallow lip balm recipe by the gram: wax, fat, oil and a firm set

A home tallow lip balm recipe is about a fifth beeswax and half tallow, with a liquid oil and 1% vitamin E for the rest. For 10 g, that's 2 g beeswax, 5 g tallow, 2.9 g oil and 0.1 g vitamin E. Our lip balm and salve firmness tool does the math.

Our Tallow Lip Balm ($12) is coming soon, and there's a waitlist through our contact page.

How to make tallow lip balm, by the gram

Ingredient Share 10 g, two tubes 15 g, one 0.5 oz tin
Beeswax 20% 2.0 g 3.0 g
Tallow 50% 5.0 g 7.5 g
Castor or jojoba oil 29% 2.9 g 4.35 g
Vitamin E 1% 0.1 g 0.15 g

Melt the wax into the oil in a heatproof cup over barely simmering water, stirring until no fleck's left. Add the tallow and stir until it's clear. Off the heat, stir in the vitamin E and test a half teaspoon on a cold plate. Pour at about 55 °C (131 °F). Fill each 0.15 oz tube a little proud, since the center sinks as it cools, and top it off with what's left.

Wax sets the firmness. For a hot climate or a summer pocket, take it toward a quarter, pulling those grams from the oil. For winter, ease it toward 15%. With half tallow, our firmness tool calls a fifth wax a firm stick and about 13% a soft glide. Past about 29%, it'll drag.

Why does a lip balm need wax when a jar doesn't?

Tallow sets firm in a jar, since USDA lists it at about half saturated fat. A tube asks more. The stick has to stand up as you twist it, and it can't slump in a warm pocket. That's the wax's job. Federal food rules define beeswax as a secretory product of honey bees, used as a structural material in honeycombs. Tallow stick vs jar explains why our jars skip it.

What should you leave out?

For chapped lips, the AAD's list of ingredients to stop using includes camphor, menthol, eucalyptus and fragrance, along with flavorings like cinnamon, citrus, mint and peppermint. Patch test a new batch on your forearm first, and keep any balm off split or bleeding lips. It's cosmetic care, not a treatment, and your provider's plan comes first. Tallow doesn't screen UV. Outdoors, the AAD's advice is a lip balm with SPF 30 or higher.

Until our Tallow Lip Balm ships, I'd press a grain of rice of Bare Silk ($34) Unscented onto your lips at bedtime, the way tallow for lips describes. Both prices are as of October 5, 2026.

Questions we hear

How do you make tallow lip balm?

Melt about a fifth beeswax into a liquid oil over a double boiler, then stir in half the batch as tallow and 1% vitamin E. For 10 g, that's 2 g beeswax, 5 g tallow, 2.9 g oil and 0.1 g vitamin E.

How much beeswax goes in tallow lip balm?

About a fifth to a quarter of the batch for a tube, with tallow and a liquid oil making up the rest. More wax holds up in summer heat. A balm in a jar doesn't need any, since suet tallow sets firm on its own.

Can you make tallow lip balm without beeswax?

Yes, in a tin or a jar, since tallow and a little oil set as a dense balm. It won't stand up in a tube. For a plant wax in a tube, our firmness tool counts candelilla as about 1.6 times as hard as beeswax, so use less.

Can I put honey in tallow lip balm?

Yes, though honey won't dissolve in fat, so I'd add a drop or two per 10 g at most, and it can still bead out. Skip it for a baby under one. The CDC says not to feed honey to any child younger than 1 year old.
