Tallow for lips: why they dry out first, and what lip balm has to do

Tallow's good for lips for the same reason any lip balm is: it lays a fat over the lip that slows the water leaving it. Lips need that sooner than cheeks do. The red part of your lip has no oil glands or sweat glands of its own, so it leans on saliva for moisture, and saliva evaporates.

Our Tallow Lip Balm ($12) is coming soon. Until it ships, I'd use Bare Silk ($34) in the Unscented original, which has no essential oils or fragrance, pressed onto your lips at bedtime. Both prices are as of October 5, 2026, and the waitlist runs through our contact page.

Why do lips dry out before the rest of your face?

The skin around your mouth has oil glands and sweat glands like the rest of your face. The vermilion, the red part we mean when we say lips, has neither, according to Cleveland Clinic, so it gets its moisture from sources like saliva. So when the air dries out, it's your lips that feel it before any other part of your face.

Licking makes it worse. Wetting dry lips feels natural, but the American Academy of Dermatology points out that saliva evaporates and leaves lips drier than before. The cycle runs one way: dry lips, a lick, a moment of relief, then drier lips. A balm that stays put is how you step out of that loop, and it's the first thing I'd change about a dry-lip habit.

What does a lip balm have to do?

A lip balm has four jobs, and I'd judge any stick by them: it has to seal, stay put, glide without dragging and sit quietly on the lip.

The seal is the fat. Sethi and colleagues describe occlusives in a 2016 review as a water-repelling layer over skin that works best when the skin's slightly damp. Petrolatum is the strongest seal in that review, cutting water loss by more than 98%. The AAD reaches for white petroleum jelly on very dry, cracked lips, because ointment seals in water longer than waxes or oils. Tallow won't out-seal it. We'd still rather wear a fat.

Staying put and gliding are a stick's problem. A stick usually leans on a little wax so it holds its shape in the tube and lasts through a cup of coffee. It shouldn't tug at dry flakes as it sweeps across your lips, either.

Sitting quietly means there's no tingle. Menthol and camphor make a balm tingle, and the AAD calls that irritation. Its list of lip balm ingredients to skip also names eucalyptus, fragrance, lanolin and flavorings like mint and cinnamon.

How do you use a tallow face jar on your lips?

Press, don't swipe. Soften a grain of rice of Bare Silk on a fingertip and press it across your lips at bedtime, when you won't be eating or talking it off. The AAD suggests lip balm several times a day and before bed, so add a thinner layer whenever your lips feel tight.

Tallow doesn't screen UV, so outdoors you'll want a lip balm with SPF 30 or higher over it, reapplied every two hours, which is the AAD's advice.

Keep the jar to intact lips. A split that bleeds is broken skin, and a cold sore is a contagious blister, so keep balm and fingers off both. Don't share lip products with anyone who has a cold sore. Lips that stay chapped past two or three weeks of care, or cold sores that keep coming back, are a board-certified dermatologist's call. It's cosmetic care, not a treatment. Your provider's plan comes first.

For lips today, Bare Silk Unscented is the jar I'd hand you, five ingredients with no essential oils or fragrance. It smells like nothing, which matters when a balm sits right under your nose. It's also the jar we point to for pregnancy and baby skin. When our Tallow Lip Balm ships, it'll have had the same wear tests as every recipe: weeks on my skin and the family's before it gets a label.

Start with Bare Silk ($34), five ingredients and sixty days to disagree.

Questions we hear

Is beef tallow good for chapped lips, or does it just sit on top of them?

It mostly sits on top, and that's the point. Tallow is a fat, so it lays a layer over the lip that slows water loss and relieves the feel of chapped skin, and it does its best work pressed on at bedtime. It won't out-seal petrolatum, the AAD's pick for very dry, cracked lips. If your lips have split or bled, that's broken skin, and any balm should wait until they've closed.

Can I use beef tallow as a chapstick?

You can, as long as you're fine using a fingertip instead of a tube. A grain of rice of unscented tallow balm, pressed on, does the main job of a chapstick, which is sealing in water. A stick usually leans on wax to hold its shape and stay on. Our own Tallow Lip Balm, $12, is coming soon, and you can join the waitlist by writing to us through the contact page.

What is tallow lipstick?

It's a lipstick with tallow in its fatty base, usually alongside a wax for shape and a pigment for color. The fat is the easy part. The color is the part to ask about, because the FDA says lead turns up in cosmetics as an impurity that can't be avoided. Its draft guidance recommends lip products stay at or under 10 parts per million. The agency says that much wouldn't pose a health risk, and its testing found more than 99% of products below it.

Can I put tallow on a cold sore?

No. A cold sore is a contagious blister, so keep any balm and your fingers off it. Don't share lip products with anyone who has one either. Your balm can go back on once the skin underneath has fully closed over and the sore is gone.

Will tallow on my lips smell like beef?

Not from ours. Our suet's nearly scentless, and Bare Silk Unscented smells like nothing. The scented jars smell like the botanical on the label, then ease off as the balm settles in. On lips that matters, since a balm sits right under your nose.

How to use a tallow balm covers the warm-and-press method for every jar, and tallow for hands and heels handles the other spots that dry out early. If the smell worries you, will it smell like beef takes it head on. Start with the beef tallow for skin guide if you're new to tallow and want the whole picture first.
