Tinted tallow balm: what the tint does, and why we leave color out

A tinted tallow balm is a tallow balm with a pigment such as iron oxide stirred in for a sheer wash of color. It softens the look of redness and uneven tone while it's on. Ours isn't tinted. We leave color out so one jar fits every skin tone and every job in the house.

The jar I'd hand you is Bare Silk ($34 as of October 2026), and it goes under any tint you already love.

What's in a tinted tallow balm?

If a tint lists iron oxides, they're on the FDA's list of color additives for cosmetics, eye area included. The rule calls them synthetically prepared. So mineral on a tint's label tells you what the pigment is, an oxide of iron, more than where it came from. If mica's listed too, that's a white powder from the mineral muscovite. Non-nano means the maker says its particles sit above the nanoscale, which an FDA guidance puts at about 1 to 100 nanometers.

Is a tinted tallow balm a sunscreen?

Not unless its label carries an SPF, since tallow on its own doesn't screen UV. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says the iron oxide in tinted sunscreens helps protect skin from the sun's visible light. That light can darken skin, especially in darker skin tones. Without an SPF, I wouldn't count a tint as sun protection, and our blue light post has the research.

Why isn't our tallow balm tinted?

A tint has to match one face, and our jars go on every skin in the house. In my wear tests, the same jar of Bare Silk goes on the baby's cheeks and into Brian's beard. Color has no job in either place. A tinted line comes in shades, and we'd rather leave color to the products built for it, like your tinted sunscreen.

How do you get the tinted look?

Wear the balm under the tint, the way you'd wear any moisturizer. Warm a pea until it's clear. Press it into your face and let it settle while you get dressed. The AAD advises sunscreen 15 minutes before you go outdoors, so that's when the tinted one goes on top. Our layering post has the full order. On lips, a grain of balm can go over a tinted lip product.

Under a tint, I'd wear Bare Silk Unscented, with no essential oils or fragrance to argue with your sunscreen. If redness is why you reach for a tint, a balm is cosmetic care, not a treatment, and your provider's plan comes first. At night, with the tint off, Moonlight Calm ($69) is our jar for redness-prone skin.

The jar for this job is Bare Silk ($34). Subscribe to two jars and a third rides free, and every subscription takes 25% off the first delivery.

Questions we hear

What is a tallow BB cream?

It's the same idea as a tinted tallow balm or a beef tallow tinted moisturizer: tallow with a pigment such as iron oxide stirred in for color. Check its label for an SPF before you wear it as sun protection.

Does a tinted tallow balm have SPF?

Only if the label lists an SPF, because tallow doesn't screen UV. The American Academy of Dermatology says SPF in a moisturizer or cosmetic still needs reapplying about every two hours outdoors. It also says the iron oxide in tinted sunscreens helps protect skin from visible light.

How do you make a DIY tinted tallow balm?

Stir a pinch of cosmetic-grade iron oxide into melted balm, adding more until a swatch on your jaw matches. Buy pigment that's sold for cosmetics. The FDA's rule for cosmetic iron oxides caps their lead at 10 parts per million. Patch test first.

Can you wear tallow balm under tinted sunscreen?

Yes. Press a pea of balm in first and let it settle, then smooth the tinted sunscreen over it. The American Academy of Dermatology advises sunscreen 15 minutes before you go outdoors. Don't skimp. A balm adds nothing to your SPF.
