Does beef tallow help with wrinkles?
Beef tallow helps with the look of wrinkles, mostly fine lines, by holding water in the top layers of skin and smoothing the surface for the hours it's on. It doesn't change collagen. No study I've found shows a plain fat doing that.
For the look of fine lines, the jar I'd pick is Velvet Face Renewal ($89), our clinical-strength face jar with a true 1% bakuchiol. For plain hydration, Bare Silk ($34) does everything this post says a fat can do. Prices are as of October 5, 2026.
What can a plain fat do for the look of fine lines?
Fine lines read deeper on dry skin. They soften when the outer layer, the stratum corneum, holds more water, and that's the job a moisturizer does. Mawazi and colleagues (2022) describe hydration leaving the surface smoother and more pliable. Occlusives are the part of a moisturizer that keeps water in by slowing its loss from the skin's surface, and a tallow balm works on that side.
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) puts it plainly. Its tip is that moisturizer traps water in skin, which gives it a more youthful appearance. That's the whole mechanism for a tallow balm on fine lines. It lasts while the layer lasts. A balm at bedtime and a thinner layer in the morning keep the effect going through the day.
Does tallow have retinol in it?
You'll read that tallow is rich in vitamin A, as if a jar of fat were a gentle retinoid. USDA's standard record for beef tallow lists zero micrograms of retinol per 100 grams. A grass-fed fat may differ from that record. Even so, I haven't seen a published measurement that puts any tallow near the vitamin A in a retinoid product.
Tallow's skin research is thin in general. A 2024 scoping review by Russell and colleagues found that most published work on tallow and skin lacks human subjects, and I couldn't find a trial that tests tallow on wrinkles. So the case for tallow on fine lines is the moisturizer case. It's a fair one. Anything past it belongs to actives at studied doses.
If a dermatologist has you on a prescription retinoid, a balm fits around that plan. It's cosmetic care, not a treatment. Your provider's plan comes first.
Where do actives come in, and what does Velvet carry?
Velvet is where they go. It carries a true 1% bakuchiol, twice the 0.5% in the published head-to-head trial against retinol. That trial, a 2019 British Journal of Dermatology study by Dhaliwal and colleagues, found the two comparable on wrinkles and pigment, with more scaling and stinging on retinol. Our post on bakuchiol vs retinol has the detail, so I won't repeat it.
Velvet also carries 1.5% oil-soluble vitamin C (tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate), a form that suits a balm with no water. CoQ10 and rosehip CO2 round it out. The research set the doses, and our post on oil-soluble vitamin C covers that form of vitamin C. It's a morning and night jar.
Tallow doesn't screen UV, so the morning layer of Velvet needs sunscreen over it. In a 2013 Annals of Internal Medicine trial, Hughes and colleagues assigned adults to daily sunscreen or to sunscreen whenever they chose. Over four and a half years, the daily group showed 24% less skin aging. The AAD advises a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. Our post on tallow and SPF covers what a fat can and can't do in the sun.
What can a before-and-after show?
Before-and-after photos of tallow on wrinkles are hard to judge, for one plain reason. A balm softens the look of fine lines once it's on. So an after shot taken right after a jar goes on, set beside a dry, bare before shot, will flatter any fat. That's a moisturizer working. It won't tell you what a jar does over weeks.
A fair test shoots both photos the same way: same window, same hour, same distance and no filter. Take them on bare skin, before any balm goes on. Give actives two months before you compare, and don't swap phones partway through the test. Our post on beef tallow before and after sets out what to expect.
Here is a pair that passes that test. Alison Harris, a verified Velvet reviewer, used it morning and night and took her own weekly photos, same room each time; her before and week-six pair is below, posted with her review, and the forehead detail from the same two photos follows it. The change she wrote about is the look of the lines across her forehead. What most people get at six weeks is the look of fine lines softening on a hydrated surface; the deeper lines keep the twelve-week clock, and some never move.

Velvet is the jar I'd hand you. It's suet tallow for the water-holding part, with bakuchiol and vitamin C formulated at studied doses for the look of fine lines. Bare Silk ($34) does the hydration part on its own. The kids use every jar we make except Velvet, so that one stays on the grown-ups' shelf.
The jar for this job is Velvet Face Renewal ($89). Subscribe to two jars and a third rides free, and every subscription takes 25% off the first delivery.
Questions we hear
Is beef tallow good for wrinkles?
Beef tallow is good for how fine lines look, because it holds water in the outer layer of skin and smooths the surface while it's on. It doesn't change collagen. For the look of fine lines over weeks, a balm with a studied active such as bakuchiol goes further than plain fat.
Can I wear sunscreen over a tallow balm?
Yes. The American Academy of Dermatology advises broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day on all skin that clothing doesn't cover. In a 2013 trial, adults assigned daily sunscreen showed 24% less skin aging. Let the balm settle first, and make sunscreen the last thing that goes on your face each morning.
Does tallow contain retinol?
USDA's standard record for beef tallow lists zero micrograms of retinol per 100 grams. A grass-fed fat may differ, but I haven't seen a published measurement that puts any tallow near the dose in a retinoid product. Bakuchiol is a studied retinol alternative, and it's the lead active in Velvet Face Renewal.
How long until fine lines look softer?
The hydration part shows as soon as a balm is on, and it lasts about as long as the layer does. Actives take longer, so don't judge Velvet Face Renewal in a week. Give it two months. Take photos the same way each time, and if your skin disagrees within sixty days, our 60-Day Skin Test refunds the jar.
What makes a fair before-and-after photo?
Shoot both photos the same way: same window, same hour, same distance and no filter. Use bare skin, before any balm goes on. A photo taken right after a balm goes on mostly shows hydration, which flatters any fat. Give actives two months, and don't switch phones halfway.
What is the best tallow for wrinkles?
For the look of fine lines, I'd pick the jar with studied actives in it: Velvet Face Renewal, $89 as of October 6, 2026. It pairs suet tallow with a true 1% bakuchiol and 1.5% oil-soluble vitamin C, for morning and night. A plain fat softens the look of lines while it's on, and no fat removes a wrinkle. Our post on bakuchiol vs retinol has the trial behind the bakuchiol.
Does beef tallow work for wrinkles?
It works on the look of them, for as long as the layer is on. A dense fat holds water in the outer skin and smooths the surface, so fine dry lines read softer in the same light. It doesn't change collagen, and no fat removes a set wrinkle. If you want more than hydration, the jar with studied actives is Velvet Face Renewal, and two months of photos taken in the same light is the fair test.
Does beef tallow and honey help with wrinkles?
Honey adds nothing that changes a wrinkle. The honey skin studies are mostly wound care with medical honey, and the few cosmetic trials tested water-based creams for hydration, not lines. A tallow and honey balm does what plain tallow does for the look of fine lines, with a softer feel and a honey scent. Our post on tallow and honey balm compares five of them, and Honey Glow ($42) is ours.
Is beef tallow good for wrinkles on the face?
Yes, for the look of fine lines, and the face is where a small dose goes furthest. Half a pea covers the cheeks and forehead, a grain of rice does both eyes, and it stays off the lash line. It holds water in and smooths the surface while it's on, which flatters crow's feet and the lines between the brows more than a deep fold. By day, let it settle, then put sunscreen on last.

Our beef tallow for skin guide covers what tallow does on any face, and fine lines and wrinkles: where bakuchiol fits goes further on actives. If you're weighing a plain jar for your face, our post on whether tallow is good for your face covers it. How bakuchiol works explains the active doing most of Velvet's work. For the thinnest skin on the face, tallow around the eyes covers the smaller dose and what it won't do for bags.
